Rick Warren Says Gay People Can Go to Heaven and Might Not Be Committing Sin

BY BOWATKIN IN CHRISTIAN NEWS · JUNE 11, 2013 Rick Warren, the prominent pastor and author of the best-selling book, “The Purpose Driven Life,” is openly reflective on what it means to be gay and whether or not being gay stops you from going to heaven. Warren recently stated that gay behavior might be sinful and that gay men and women can go to heaven.  Both of these statements are controversial, particularly since Warren has been known to be outspoken about gay culture.

During an interview this week with the Huffington Post, Warren was asked if being gay was a sin

“I have many, many gay friends, and have worked around the world with them in gay organizations to try to stop AIDS,” he said. “We’re doing ‘World AIDS Day’ this weekend at Saddleback Church. My wife and I have given millions of dollars to help people with HIV/AIDS and have worked with gay organizations on that.” “What about the love part, though? I hear about the AIDS part,” asked Huffpost Live Host, Marc Lamont Hill. “It’s not illegal to love somebody,” Warren replied.

“But you think it’s a sin,” Hill said.
No, it’s not a sin to love somebody,” Warren said.

“It might be a sin to have s*x with them,” he added. “It might be.” Recently, Warren spoke on CNN and was asked if it is possible for someone to be born gay.  He said that he’s not so sure about that one. I think the jury is still out on that,” he said. “It wouldn’t bother me if there was a ‘gay gene’ found, because here’s what we know about life: I have all kinds of natural feelings in my life, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that I should act on every feeling. … I do not believe that attraction is a sin, but I do believe that some actions are sin.” Also during his interview on the Huffington Post, Warren stated that he believes that gay people can still go to heaven.  This remark contradicts those of other pastors, who argue that gay people will go to hell since they are living in this form of sin. “No, not because they’re gay,” he said. “We go to Hell because we choose to reject the grace of God.” When asked if a gay man can go to heaven if he accepts Jesus, Warren was clear in his response. “He’s going to Heaven!” he declared. “Without a doubt.”



Reading this article is comparable to a see saw or the slight stomach drop experienced while descending a roller coaster, which is how I’ve viewed much of what Rick Warren has written and said for years. It is appalling that SBC “pastors” support this man and refer to him as their “brother in Christ”, which “christ”? I am quite thankful for ministries that do point out exactly what he is, a deceiver. As former SBC members it was astonishing to hear how well thought of Warren is including blatant denials of his stance on sodomy despite Uganda pastors called him out on YouTube for saying he supported them while in their presence, but changed his mind once back in America.

Warren waffles and capitulates to the culture which indicates he is not, by the biblical definition, called to the pulpit; PDL is filled with spiritual landminds yet lauded and sold in “life”way bookstores, Saddleback introduced Chrislam (links at bottom), P.E.A.C.E. plan to Africa and many other nations wreaking havoc. Far from being “America’s Pastor” he is an accurate reflection of what ails so-called evangelicalism, go along to get along and don’t warn others of the wolf packs encircling the sheep because big names bring in vast amounts of money into denominational coffers. That’s the plain truth of the matter.

Overripe onions cause eyes to tear, and peeling back the layers of this article will be a similarly unpleasant experience as Warren so twists the Word of God so as to make it resemble a pretzel rather than the two-edged sword that discerns the intentions of the heart and bring men out of darkness when preached.

  • And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made1 Ki 15:11-12
  • And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land1 Ki 22:46
  • And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove2 Ki 23:7
  • For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Ro 1:26–28

Warren regularly Saddlebacks his followers with error, and when asked if sodomy is a sin he obfuscates desiring accolades of men while waving his alms as to the millions he and Kay have given to fight AIDS. Medical research to treat HIV/AIDS is wonderful, likewise raising money in pursuit of a cure; however, perhaps warning that STD’s are  significantly higher among homosexuals would be more honorable and loving than encouraging people to ignore God’s warnings about consequences of promiscuity. Hill is to be applauded for seeking clarification since his question was not addressed. Warren’s response, “No, it’s not a sin to love somebody,” in an attempt to please everyone, he adds, “It might be a sin to have s*x with them, … it might be.” 

When CNN asked if one is born gay, Warren’s cognitive dissonance was evident, “I think the jury is still out on that. . . It wouldn’t bother me if there was a ‘gay gene’ found,“. Mr. Warren, decades-long medical scientific studies indicate there is no “gay” gene.[2, 3, 4]  The Huffington Post has it wrong, it is not “pastors who argue that gay people will go to hell since they are living in this form of sin.” Rather, the Creator of humanity and the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, warns:

  • Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judgeHeb 13:4
  • Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jud 7

Quite clear. No grey area or “wiggle room” therein. God says,

  • Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God1 Co 6:9–10

Warren states humanity goes to hell for rejecting the grace of God, that is only half truth. Mankind will go to hell for failing to agree with God that they are wretched sinners, enemies of His, refuse to repent, and accept salvation as through the Lord Jesus Christ alone. True salvation requires taking up our cross, which demands dying to self and being resurrected into new life in Christ; thus, the old man and his lustful passions have passed away and God places His Holy Spirit within. It is this repentance which wroughts eternal life because it is all a work of God, who draws sinners to His Son, and then begins conforming those reborn to be more like Christ in righteousness. As repeatedly stated on EZC, this will never be completely realized until death or glorification. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 Jn 1:10 Nevertheless, disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ will tell you who they are today is unrecognizable to whom they previously were. We no longer have a heart of stone, but one of flesh, 

  • Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart2 Co 3:3
  • If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousnes. 1 Jn 1:8–9

Warren did get one thing right, any homosexual that is drawn by the Father to repentance and comes to the Lord Jesus Christ broken and contrite will be saved (Ps 34:18, 51:17). Other familiar portions of scripture,

  • They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentanceLk 5:31–32
  • And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evilJohn 3:13–20

Men like Rob Bell, Brian McLaren[5], and Rick Warren are leading men and women astray. A particular sin is okay due to “evolving” cultural opinion, despite the Bible speaking clearly to the contrary. Not only is this hypocrisy it identifies these men as false teachers. Warren=Chrislam.[6, 7, 8, 9]

  1. i think what i failed to mention is that the Love of Christ covers all. it covers sinners like thieves, murderers, gossipers, abusers, liars, etc. basically it covers EVERYONE because everyone is in the same boat: we are all sinners. my view is to LOVE everyone: gay or straight, truth teller or liar, honest or dishonest. i would like to point people in the right direction so they may live a happy and fulfilled life to fullest like Jesus said, but i don’t do the job of judging, because i am told not to in the Bible. this is a sticky situation, i will admit that. but a soul who honestly comes to Christ and believes in Christ is redeemed no matter what they did, do, or continue to do.


    1. Oddly, Jeffro, prior to approving a comment never has there been a ‘thumbs up’ – that’s a new one. Agree we are to love all people, but a definition of “all” is in order since not all will be saved; more importantly, love tells the truth and shares what God says of sin and the new life in Christ. Once reborn in Christ, our life should be characterized by a continued growth in righteousness and departure from sins formerly reveled in.

      Many misapply “judge not lest ye be judged” to imply we are never to question teaching or examine a person’s fruit which is in stark contrast to scripture: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 Jn 4:1; and, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Mt 7:15-20

      Clearly, the Lord is warning us to examine teaching and if any pastor affirms someone to remain in sin which the bible condemns, wisdom requires departing that teacher. While true ultimate judgment belongs to the Judge at the Bema seat, we are to examine ourselves: "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" 2 Co 13:5 How much more those who are in authority over us as pastors?

      How grateful to have an intercessor, the Lord Jesus Christ, who daily intercedes for us before the Father. The Holy Spirit equips us to resist sin and we will gain victory although it is He who sanctifies and we who yield. Paul addresses this, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” .. “What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” Ro 6:1-4, 15-16

      All of that said, I am well aware we will never be sinless until glorification. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 Jn 1:8-10

Christianity needs to keep true to the Bible while at the same time staying current with our culture. we also need to realize that the Bible was not written for 21st century readers, but for 1st century people. many things that are “permissible” in the Bible ( slavery, women remaining silent and covering their heads, etc) are no longer culturally relevant. that doesn’t mean we throw out the Bible, it means we use it for learning, teaching, and study, but we are not commanded to reject our culture and accept the culture of 1st century Jewish customs

That is quite a progressive philosophical view of the bible versus what God says, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: But the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Is 40:8 Fact is God’s Word is unchangeable, immutable and not open to reinterpretation. The Bible is timeless and remains the means through which God has chosen to draw repentant sinners to rebirth and salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. He saves, draws, and changes the human heart to pursue Him and His righteousness rather than chasing after worldly debauchery as we once did. If reborn in Christ, we no longer chase rusty trinkets and now prefer the manna from heaven which nourishes the soul and grants wisdom.

      The Old Testament is far from being “Jewish” customs, it reveals the utter depravity and deceitfulness of the human heart; moreover, it so reveals the holiness of God that it becomes clear the only way man could be reconciled to God after the Fall was through the coming of Immanuel, the Lord Jesus Christ, who lived a sinless life fulfilling all the Law and Prophets, resurrected from the dead, ascended to heaven and is presently drawing sinners unto Himself. Apart from that, everyone of us, including you and I, would be in hell for rejecting God. Sadly, many have sought to reinterpret and rewrite God’s Word to make it palatable to a culture bent on making a god in their own image unable to redeem anyone. The Bible is God revealing Himself to all people throughout the world, both Jew and Gentile. Lastly, knowledge of the Old Testament is crucial to understanding the New Testament since Genesis through Revelation are all about the Lord Jesus Christ. As it is written, “I will worship toward thy holy temple, And praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Ps 138:2

      This blog always stresses that all fornication or adultery, idolatry, drunkenness, etc., God says will result in eternal separation from Him in hell. Jesus warned that while there have always false teachers and prophets these will increase exponentially and culminate with the man of sin whom unsaved people will mistakenly believe to be the messiah. “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” 2 Th 2:10-12 (see: 2 Th 2:1-9)

Rick Warren is finally talking about an issue that so many Christians have avoided by just claiming its a sin and moving on. and it gets passed down from generation to generation. this generation is asking “why” someone is doomed to hell just for being gay. yet we offer grace to murderers, thieves, gossipers, and the like. for some reason homosexuality is today what slavery was years ago. its something that we always thought one way about until we realized the human side of it and looked at the teachings in the bible in that context. and our views changed. they changed on women’s roles in ministry and the inspiration of God still speaking today. we need to love. and grace happens to those who may not think they are receiving it. there is nobody on earth who does not continue in sin. and although we all do, we all agree that we have saving grace. people may debate what “continuing in sin” means, but in my study of the Scriptures i find it to mean that its not just repeating the same sin over and over, but its a life lived in a world that is broken, and i mess up in many areas quite frequently. so i continue in sin. but that is my human understanding. St Paul tells me that i no longer sin if i am in Christ. so a gay person who is in Christ is still in Christ whether or not they lie, cheat, steal, or have an open (or hidden) gay lifestyle.

      Somehow both comments were sent to spam, problem solved. The core issue is Warren’s inability, or unwillingness, to stand firm on what God has to say not the culture. Whoever told you that sin “gets past down from generation to generation” has a birdbath view of scripture akin to “God helps those who help themselves.” Your last sentence really breaks my heart.

      Let’s approach this differently, decades ago I engaged in pre-marital s*x a violation of God’s commandment for sex outside of marriage is: fornication. Paul was quite clear in warning us, “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Co 6:18-20 Had I remained in my sin, hell would have awaited, “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.” 1 Co 7:2

      St Paul tells me that I no longer sin if I am in Christ, so a gay person who is in Christ is still in Christ whether or not they lie, cheat, steal, or have an open (or hidden) gay lifestyle.” Jeffro, that is a lie from the pit of hell! God warns that the serpent (Satan, Devil, Liar and the father of it, etc.) is more cunning than any other; moreover, he hates God and will engage in any form of distraction, deception, temptation, or affirmation to maintain a person in sin that will result in eternal separation from God as is Satan’s sealed fate. “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Co 6:9-11 That last verse is crucial – such were some of you. Salvation wrought in the human heart bears the fruit of sanctification and a true fear of offending a Holy God for all He has given to reconcile wretched sinners unto Himself.

      “Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” … “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” … “Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.       If anyone you know has been on the receiving end of hateful and hurtful words about homosexuality, I am truly sorry for this does not reflect the heart of a Christian. We are to love all, and warn all without showing partiality.
